Good pruning makes trees safer and longer-lived

The goal of trimming isn't to make a tree smaller. It's to remove what's dead, weak or in the way, so the rest of the tree can grow strong. A proper pruning job leaves cuts just outside the branch collar and keeps the tree's natural shape.

Common trimming jobs

  • Deadwood removal: dead limbs are the ones that fall in the next storm.
  • Roof and gutter clearance: keeps branches off shingles and cuts down on clogged gutters.
  • Raising the canopy: clearance over driveways, sidewalks and play sets.
  • Crown thinning: lets wind pass through the canopy and light reach the lawn.
  • Structural pruning: corrects weak forks on young trees before they split.

Power lines are off-limits

Branches touching the lines on the poles or the service line to your house need a qualified line-clearance crew. Don't let a regular crew or a neighbor with a pole saw near them. Contact DTE Energy about trees near their lines.

Typical trimming costs

HomeGuide's 2026 data puts trimming at about $400–$900 per tree, averaging about $650, depending on size and access (source).

Tree trimming FAQs

When is the best time to trim trees in Michigan?

Late fall through late winter, while trees are dormant, is the best time for most pruning. It's easier to see the branch structure and there's less disease pressure. Oaks especially should not be pruned April 15 to July 15.

How often should trees be trimmed?

Many mature shade trees do well with pruning every 3 to 5 years. Young trees benefit from lighter structural pruning more often. Fruit and ornamental trees have their own schedules.

What is 'topping' and should I do it?

Topping cuts the main branches back to stubs. Arborists widely advise against it because it causes weak regrowth and decay. If a quote says 'top the tree,' ask for crown reduction instead.

Can you trim branches over my neighbor's property?

Generally you can trim branches that hang over your side, but you shouldn't harm the tree or go onto their property without permission. Talk to your neighbor first. It avoids most disputes.
